Subject: [*] AMT-More-Modems
Attached please find a bin-hexed StuffIt archive that contains new Apple Modem
Tool resources for adding modems to the Apple Modem Tool. I am the author of
these resources. I have developed them after extensive testing with the
respective modems. These resources may be freely distributed.
AMT-PPI-14400FXSA is a modem resource that can be used in conjunction with
the Apple Modem Tool v1.5 to add the Practical Peripherals 14400FXSA modem to
the tool's list of choices available. (Note to archivists: you may want to
delete the earlier version I posted some months ago.)
AMT-AT&T-Dataport is a modem resource that can be used in conjunction with
the Apple Modem Tool v1.5 to add the AT&T Dataport modem to the tool's list
of choices available.
You add these resources by using the Apple Modem Tool itself. In the pop-up
menu of modem choices, you select "Modify this menu". In the dialog box that
follows, select the "Import" button. Point the file open dialog box at
either of these resources, and you will add four flavors of modem settings
for the selected modem. The resources can be removed in a similar fashion.
The files include custom finder icons.
These files also contain a custom modem cable PICT resource, which makes a
minor correction to the one contained in the Apple Modem Tool itself.
These files may be freely distributed as long as they remain intact.
Changes since last distribution:
--added "STR" resource to explain function when double- clicking on file in
Finder
--added "vers" resource for "Get Info" appearance
Best regards,
Jim Hebert.

Here is yet another fix to Aurora so that it doesn't crash on
machines w/out color quickdraw. The last "update" (v 3.0.1)

up the alert to tell the user required CQD itself. Needless to say,

Subject: [*] CalConvert 1.1
CalConvert (formerly QuickConvert) is a small shareware
utility that does integer arithmetic calculations and
converts integer values to different bases (decimal,
hexadecimal, binary, octal or any custom base between 2 and
32) or to an OSType (a sequence of four ASCII characters).
The conversion may be signed or unsigned (you can always
enter a signed value, it will be converted to unsigned if
needed); the result may be interpreted either as a word (2
bytes) or as a long word (4 bytes). The Return and Enter
keys start the conversion; Tab, shift-Tab and the four arrow
keys have their usual meaning.
New in 1.1: CalConvert no more requires System 7.

Subject: [*] DBugR 1.1
DBugR is a cool Control Panel for programmers and hackers
who often have to break into MacsBug (or any other debugger
supporting the _DebugStr trap). It puts a floating "small
bomb" icon on your desktop which acts like a button. If the
mouse button is pressed and released inside the icon,
there's a user interrupt and MacsBug is called. DBugR can
show some basic info about the current application (name,
free memory, max free block) and/or send one of two
user-configurable MacsBug commands to be executed
immediately upon breaks (hold down the Option key when
clicking to send the alternate command). The icon may be
moved anywhere on any monitor by holding down the Shift key
and dragging it around.
New in 1.1: checks if a low-level debugger is running :-)

It has come to my attention that I should have included a description

it. I am sorry. ADM is a bibliography manager for the Mac. It tracks
all your references and notes and formats them in four styles: APA, MLA,
Turabian, and Name & Year. It does footnotes and bibliographies and imports
and exports data. It can perform boolean and/or/not searches, has
a keywords field, and is generally very helpful for anyone in academia or

I usually carry a printer din-8 cable in my PB's carrying case. That way, when

You can put Peter Lewis' excellent $5 FTPd daemon on the Mac and then
use one of the Mac FTP clients such as that which comes with Versaterm
or the shareware Fetch to get and put files. (FTPd and Fetch are on sumex).
That may be sufficient for most purposes.
You can use Timbuktu (Pro) to control the remote Mac over ethernet OR

I got no responses to my query about BackSplash 1.0.3 being naughty (I've
been sharing 1.0.2 with several dozen of my close personal friends over
the past week or so), so I dropped the author a note. His response came
promptly and is attached. Mike is quite right. The "sysz" resource in
the 1.0.3 version was set at 0005584E, compared with 0001128E in the
1.0.2 incarnation. A quick mental hex-dec conversion says BIG NUMBER. But
it came with the virgin 1.0.3 direct from ZMac. It had not been messed
with.
With a bit of ResEdit magic, I pasted the 1.0.2 sysz resource into 1.0.3
and no problem, mon.
The problem with the virgin 1.0.3 showed up only on my office IIcx, with
MODE32 necessary to see/use its 24meg. Didn't happen on my home 24M IIci.
I suggested that Mike change the 1.0.3 on ZMac to drop its sysz.
Hope this information helps someone.

"Got a message saying that BackSplash didn't have enough memory and
inviting me to reboot with extensions off so I could kill the sucker."
Well, that message isn't one of BackSplash's. Between versions 1.0.2 and 1.0.3
of BackSplash, the changes relate mainly to adding alias resolution and
randomly choosing from more than the 1st ten pict's in the BackSplash PICTs
folder.
It sounds like to me that the memory size request stored in the 'sysz' resource
(much like the memory size mechanism used for regular applications) somehow got
way too large. BackSplash adjusts this size itself when during installation, it
does not have enough memory to load the picture. It increases the size by a
guestimate (sometimes it can't really tell how much more is needed) and gives
you a message telling why it didn't install a picture and how much more memory
it thinks it needs. Sometimes this process _can_ get out of whack because the
System heap just can't be made big enough for a particular picture. If the
'sysz' value gets too big, you can "reset" it by either reloading the original
release version of BackSplash from the .sit file, or, using ResEdit or
Resorcerer to set the size in the 'sysz' resource back down to something low
like 100K or so. The 'sysz' resource is a 4-byte hex value so to set it to
100K, you'd make it look like 00019000.
One of these days, I'll replace that whole mechanism with a better one, but
there is nothing intrinsically wrong or different with it between 1.0.2 and
1.0.3.

Correct. We (the computer center) bought two vx with internal CD drives during

Using Easy View to read the Digest and Eudora to reply selected articles, side

process.
My idea is a macro for Eudora, if such a thing is possible, that takes the
entire text of an article in the clipboard (placed there by doing a Select All
and a Copy in Easy View), extracts the subject from the header, inserts a "On
<date>, <name> wrote:" line at the beginning, taking the name and date from the
header, then inserts the entire article body, prepended with >, and places the
cursor right after.
Is there such a beast out there ? If not, is this doable ?

In that case, won't such devices be very inefficient when communication

You also have to take into account the cost of producing the pressing master.
In commercial music CD's this isn't a significant factor, cause it gets spread
out over the several thousand copies made and sold. However, in a much smaller
market, such as the one for the Info-Mac CD, the number of copies sold will be
much fewer, and this will necessarily raise the individual cost.

Speaking of the Internet, up to last year, yes. However (and I'm sure the net

the U.S. federal government is no longer paying for the operation of the

[Mild Flame On]
am happy to pay the people that create the Info-Mac CD-ROM the $50 for
their efforts to compile info-mac archives into one CD-ROM.
If someone thinks they could do it and charge less, I say go for it or stop
complaining.
Let's look at the numbers.
You have to press enough CD-ROMs to be able to give one to every author.
Lets use $1.50 per CD-ROM for manufacturing plus shipping ($2.50) and a
rough count of 1502 individual items on the CD-ROM brings your initial cost
to $7510 before you even produce the CD-ROM. Then of course you need to pay
people to do all the permission checking and copying (say 15 minutes for
each item and low wages $4.00 * 15/60 * 1502 = $1502). And 5 minutes per
order that needs to be shipped ($4 * 5/60 * 1502 = $500). Oh yes, you need
to have several very large hard drives ($3000) and a communications budget
that is at a minimum $0.50 per author to obtain their permissions ($751).
You'll need a color Mac for the single employee ($2500). My rough
calculation brings the startup cost to $15763.
[I forgot the NetCom charges for downloading all the files. I forgot office
space or even rent for a room.]
Now at $10 income per CD-ROM minus the $2.50 you pay for shipping and the
$1.50 for production and the 5 minutes processing per order $0.33, you are
left with around $4.67 "profit" from each CD-ROM you sell.
Based upon these quick estimates, after you sell your 3376th CD-ROM at $10,
you will break even. Hey if you feeling lucky, go for it and compete with
them.
By my estimates, if he takes no salary and doesn't have to eat or pay
insurance or pay for gasoline for his car, doesn't need to pay an
electricity bill or rent, he breaks even after selling 353 copies of the
CD-ROM. I sincerely hope he sells that many, it's a gamble I would not want
to take. If someone else thinks that they can do the job for less than $50
per CD-ROM, and do it legally, I say go for it! But, unless you are willing
to go through the same effort, and put down significant cash with no
promise you'll get it back, don't begrudge these folks the money they
charge.

translator for existing True Form forms in it. Like True Forms, you could not
have multiple layouts for one forms database. However, you can both export and
import data, and you can write scripts to automate the update of a database
that could give you that reporting capability.
kee@kagi.com says:
One nice feature that might be useful for you is it's ability to query a
database and pull information off the database for use in the form.
The internal script language does a good job of creating interactive forms
and the ability to use DigiSign on various fields in the form allows you to
let people sign a form electronically and know with absolute certainty that
they and only they signed the form. NASA Ames demonstrated their electronic
purchase requisition a couple weeks ago. They have a hellishly complex
purchase req and the electronic version goes through the system in hours
now instead of weeks and with fewer mistakes since choices are checked
electronically.
Again, thanks to all of you. I hope the information in this summary is
useful to others.

Subject: interslip
I'm sure Intercon can describe their product well, but here goes: Interslip
is a system extension that allows the Mac to access a slip (serial line
interface protocol) connection to a unix or slip host. It works with MacTCP
(which it must have) to provide a genuine tcp/ip connection to the remote
host. You use the Interslip setup program to setup the system extension
with baud rates, phone numbers, slip connection types, etc. I have used it
and it works quite well. However, in order to use it you must have MacTCP,
an internet address, a modem, and some tcp/ip access software such as ncsa
telnet or other. First you install the interslip system extension, reboot,
configure MacTCP with the correct ip addressing info and select slip in the
MacTCP control panel, reboot, then you then configure interslip with phone
number info, and you are ready to call a slip line from interslip setup.
After connection is established you then use a telnet or ftp (or whatever)
program to reach the distant host through the phone connection. Neat huh???

MacTCP is a translator. It enables the Macintosh to speak the
language of the Internet, TCP (Transmission Control Protocol),
just as Macs normally speak AppleTalk to one another. You must
have the MacTCP control panel installed and configured properly
for the MacTCP-based programs like Fetch and TurboGopher to work,
although keep in mind that MacTCP is not making the connection
itself. Think of MacTCP as the Babel Fish from the Hitchhiker's
Guide to the Galaxy. Pop it in your Mac's ear, and your Mac
understands the Internet noise that's flowing in and out.
SLIP and PPP provide the connection for that Internet noise for
those of us who connect via a modem. If you have a network, either
Ethernet or LocalTalk, connected to the Internet, you don't need
SLIP or PPP. The easiest way to think of SLIP and PPP is to assume
that you don't have water service to your house. Every time you
want to take a shower, you must run a garden hose out to the water
hookup outside, take your shower, and then bring the hose back in.
That's exactly what SLIP and PPP do - they establish a temporary,
low-speed connection to the Internet. You must create that
connection before you can run programs like Fetch and TurboGopher
that assume the connection exists. Although some implementations
of SLIP and PPP allow you to launch a MacTCP-based program without
connecting first (SLIP or PPP see what's up and then establish the
connection), I've found that these auto connect features tend to
be flaky. If you can use an auto connect feature, great, but if it
doesn't work reliably, always connect manually first.
SLIP and PPP are more or less functionally identical - they do the
same thing. However, SLIP and PPP accounts are not the same, so
you cannot use a SLIP program with a PPP account and vice versa.
When I wrote my book, I felt that InterSLIP was the best of the
free implementations, but now I think that MacPPP 2.0.1 has the
edge because it supports loopback addressing, which enables Peter
Lewis's Talk to work on a Server addressed account (which isn't
true of InterSLIP). There are two other commercial SLIP programs,
VersaTerm SLIP and MacSLIP, and a commercial PPP program called
InterPPP should be out soon. I'll mostly concentrate on InterSLIP
and MacPPP but keep in mind that the commercial implementations
have solved some problems that I've been unable to fix using the
free implementations and generally are more full-featured. You
get what you pay for.
You can use either SLIP or PPP, but not both at the same time - I
merely include information on both below because InterSLIP and
MacPPP are both free and valid ways of connecting to the Internet
via modem. I know more about InterSLIP so those sections will be
more detailed.
So your SLIP or PPP program dials the modem to create a connection
to the Internet, and MacTCP translates all the Internet traffic
appropriately for programs like Fetch and TurboGopher.

As an examples, you can NOT install A/UX (Apple UNIX) from a NEC drive. All

To have the NEC drive working, you need some NEC drivers that will handle
the non-standard NEC drive behaviour.
BTW: I think that the $50 for the CD_ROM is NOT unreasonable. Just look
what the other CD-ROMs with shareware collections costs. Cutting the price
$10 would be nice, but I understand they run at higher prices at least
until a break-even is reached.

work fine using either the menu or the restart button on the box...this ONLY
happens on powerup. The 040 enabler file is in the system folder. So far,
I've tried trashing and deleting the system folder, and completely
reinstalling 7.1; booting off the System Tools disk (works fine); and moving
the system folder to my external HD, which I then set as the startup disk.
That caused it to bomb both on powerup and all subsequent restarts, sending me
back to the system tools disk to get the machine to run at all. I even tried
replacing the system folder on the internal hard drive with the System Tools
system folder, on the theory that it works OK on the floppy so should work on
the HD as well. Still bombed on powerup. I'm confused. Any ideas?

and then quit to finder, moved things around on the desktop, and was
generally satisfied with my Mac's ability to load and run from ancient
op systems.
I'm curious to know if macs that have been accelerated to run with a
68040 CPU (when previously they didn't) are still backward-compatible
with older op systems: say, for instance, is someone out there has a
Mac II with '040 accelerator, can you still run system 4?
The point being, unless there's something about the chip architecture
of the '040, there's no excuse for recent machines' lack of backward
compatibility--especially the inability of some recent Macs to run
system 6! The idea that a modern Mac cannot boot from the largest
conventional-sized floppy that it supports is rather ridiculous. BTW,
I remember that there was once a Mac that contained an emergency op
system on the ROMS--if you used a certain key combination, it would
boot up from that system. Good idea--why can't Apple stick a copy of
7.1 on the ROMS if they can't make a Quadra run system 6 or shoehorn
their bloated OS onto a 1.44 disk?

I don't want to imply that RAM Doubler isn't causing you problems,
since anything that works at such a low level is bound to have some
conflicts (and many have already been fixed - Connectix just posted
a free updater here a few days ago), but have you considered the possibility
that your System really is damaged, and that the presence of RAM Doubler
is merely the trigger necessary to display that fact to you? Frankly,
if anything told me my System was damaged, I'd tend to believe it,
since it's pretty easy to replace a damaged System, whereas it might
take more time to recover from a nasty crash if I hadn't saved my
work in a while. System files get corrupted - there's nothing shocking
in that...

Subject: RamDoubler vs FAXstf
I installed RamDoubler on my PB 145b 4/80 with great success. But on my
LC III 12/160 there seems to be a major conflict with FAXstf 3.0. The
problem is that incoming faxes hang the computer, requiring a manual
shutr down and restart. Take off RamDoubler and the faxes come in fine.
Has anyone else had this problem? I'll be very grateful for any advice.

I just experienced exactly the same behaviour when returning to work after
the weekend. The IIvx had been on over the weekend, and today the network
was gone. LocalTalk worked fine though.
After reading your posting, I tried a restart. Suddenly the ethernet was
back were it used to be... I have never seen this before, and I have had
RAM Doubler 1.01 installed for about one week.
I haven't done any further investigations as to see if RAM Doubler was the
cause for this, but I thought my observation could be of interest.

I recently inquired as to what folks recommend for TCP/IP applications for the
Mac. Here's a summary of the responses I received:
MacTCP 2.0.4 (must buy - best source is Adam Engst's Book Internet
Starter Kit for the Macintosh - (2.0.2) is on the floppy
in the back and updaters are available on the net
2.0.x->2.0.4)
Eudora 1.4.1 - free email program (Commercial version available)
NewsWatcher 2.0d17 - free
Fetch 2.1.1 - free/shareware ftp (free to individuals...)
Anarchie 1.1.0 - $10 shareware, easily worth 5x that price
Mac Mosaic 1.0.3 - free ftp/news/gopher/wais/WWW interface (get the
helper apps too - JPEGView 3.0, SoundPlayer...)
Finger & Fingerd - $5(povertyware)

Subject: Running Mac and PC simultaneously ?
The new project I am working for requires me to generate various documents
using Word for Windows. These documents must be stored and maintained on a
"Microsft LAN Manager" server.
I am currently using a Quadra 700 and I do not want to give up my Mac for a
PC. I first thought I could install an Orange Micro board (with a 486
processor) in the Quadra but I was told that I should expect quite a number of
problems with such a configuration.
Now I am planning to buy a PC and run it simultaneously with the Mac. As a
consequence I will have to use two screens and two keyboards.... :-(
Questions:
1. I am sure there are quite a number of you which are working simultaneously
in both environments, Mac and PC. How did you resolve this problem?
2. Can I expect MS Word 6 for the Macintosh (once it becomes available) to
offer improved conversion features with its Word for Windows counterpart ?
3. When is MS Word 6 for the Macintosh expected to be released ?
4. Can I connect a single screen to the Mac and the PC and then switch forth
and back ?
Thanks for your reply !

I'd look for an extension conflict there - it doesn't take anywhere
near that long for me, although the CTB is none too fast in this regard.

This may be a CTB limitation as well.
> You can't type in the terminal window to send commands to the modem.
That's the problem with the way the CTB works, no? I think if you
select the Serial tool, you can do this.
> You need additional software to create "macros".
True, but it's not particularly hard to come by AppleScript since
there are at least two books (the Tao of AppleScript and a handbook
by Danny Goodman) that include it for about $30. It would have been
nice if Aladdin had included AppleScript, but SITcomm is small and
cheap and wasn't meant to be a mongo app like MicroPhone. I approve
of including the ability to record macros, but not increasing the
price of the package by including everything you might want, like
Word does.
> The Apple VT102 tool does not seem to be ANSI, even though the pop-up in

Right, once again a CTB problem.
I don't want to sound as though SITcomm is flawless, but I did want
to point out that a number of the problems here could very well apply
to any CTB application, which is not Aladdin's fault, but Apple's.

Lately my LC's been making some kind of alert sound. It sounds kinda like
m/ M/ M\ M\
i.e. it rises in pitch for teh first two notes, then drops in pitch for the
latter two. The sound occurs about every half hour (not on any specific inter-
val) after my Mac's been on for some time. I think its due to an extension; I
have far too many to list here.
Anyone out there have any clue as to what is causing this and what it
indicates?

Subject: Troubles with InterSLIP
Hi to anyone who may be able to help me.
I am using a Macintosh Color Classic with system 7.1. I have a USR Sportster
v.32bis and can not get InterSLIP to connect.
I aquired InterSLIP from Adam Engst's book "The Internet Starter Kit for
Macintosh" it is version 1.0.1. I have followed all the instructions in his
book as to the set up of InterSLIP and MacTCP.
I have done a clean reinstall of the system software. I reintalled InterSLIP
and MacTCP (and yes I deleted all the extranious related files), I have
eliminated any init, control panel, extension conflicts and I am still lost.
After running InterSLIP Setup and setting up the configuration, I click on
the CONNECT button, the status line says "waiting" the Terminal Ready light
shines on the modem and then nothing, InterSLIP simply reverts to "idle".
If there is anyone out there that can give me a hand I would be very
appreciative. Thanx.

Subject: Writing to 5.25" PC floppy?
Hello wise netters,
Question:
Does there exist a Mac-to-PC file exchange app (Mac/PC Exchange, AccessPC,
etc.) which will work with a 5.25" floppy drive through an Apple IIe card
inside the LC (LCII, LCIII) ?
Background:
A friend would like to start a small in-home business. He'd prefer to stay
Mac based. The major requirement is to be able to write PC formatted floppies,
both 3.5" and 5.25". Writing to the 3.5" is not a problem with a SuperDrive
equipped Mac. It's the 5.25" format that is the problem, IMO. If my friend
cannot find a Mac solution, he's gonna buy a PeeCee 8-( .
Applied Engineering's 5.25" Apple II drive will work on an LC with the IIe
emulation card installed. So, I was hoping to recommend my friend to buy
an LCII or LCIII, the IIe card, the AE 5.25" drive and one Mac-to-PC file
exchange program.
Thanks for your attention,

There is a font conflict going on. We had the same problem. I seem to
recall that ZTerm has its own fonts it draws from and it has the same id
as one of the Helvetica varieties (either Postscript or Truetype, I can't
remember which). Try disabling all of your Helvetica fonts and then enable
them one-by-one to see which is the offender. Of course you have to reload
the application each time you enable another font.

You can make a "personal appleTalk tunnel" connection from a Macintosh
to an ARNS server over the IP-connected internet. The Mac clients may
be any of
* A Macintosh with Ethernet/SLIP/PPP, MacTCP and IPRemote AT adev.
* A Macintosh with Async AppleTalk adev 2.0 connected to a serial
port on a UNIX machine running the 'async' program.
* A Macintosh with AppleTalk Remote Access connected to a serial
port on a UNIX machine running the 'aarap' program.
The ARNS server currently supports Phase 1 and Phase 2 EtherTalk networks
on SUN, DEC ULTRIX/Alpha, SGI IRIX, Sony NEWS 4.2, HP-UX 8.07 and IBM RS6000
AIX workstations, and Phase 1 only on Sony NEWS pre-4.2 and 386BSD/FreeBSD
workstations. Security for access to the server is provided with an optional
server password and/or username & password pair. Access can be restricted to
clients that appear on an IP address filter list. The server may only be
run by a UNIX superuser.
ARNS is available via FTP from munnari.OZ.AU as mac/arns.tar.Z, ARA clients
are in mac/arns_arap/*
